What consequences could implementing a 4-day work week have?

Companies that take part in the pilot project, promoted by the Ministry of Industry and Culture, to apply a 4-day work week, will have to reduce the total working day by at least 10%, without reducing the salaries of the workforce, and commit to maintaining it for two years. In return, all small and medium-sized companies that apply it will receive up to €150,000.

It seems that the Government sent the draft order, which will regulate the promotion of the four-day workday, for public consultation in mid-June, and it is expected to publish the definitive order in the coming days, according to sources involved in the negotiations.

This pilot project has a budget of 10 million euros, but each company that launches it will have to comply with the bases that will be published soon, and approximately 60 or 70 SMEs will be able to benefit from it, according to data from El Periódico.

It should be noted that to join this plan, companies will have to incorporate organizational measures, both in production processes and training, to generate an improvement in productivity that compensates for the higher wage costs. And in order to promote all this, the Government is planning temporary direct aid to compensate for all the costs assumed by companies.

The project also raises the possibility of partially financing the salary costs of workers who are involved in the reduction of this working day, and the costs of training in terms of optimizing working time, as well as the costs of external collaborations or internal personnel to redesign processes.

Companies that choose to take advantage of this plan will have it easier with time and project management tools such as Timenet, a system that helps companies adapt to the new times and all the work circumstances that may arise.
