The new Belgian labor model

The Belgian government has recently reached an agreement to reform its current labor model, which especially highlights the possibility of concentrating the working day in 4 days, or making schedules completely flexible, with the aim of giving much more freedom to workers.

This measure is specified in an agreement through which people who work will be able to combine all the hours of weekly work in 4 days, and therefore work a 10-hour workday during this period, since this measure does not contemplate working fewer hours per week, but rather grouping these hours at the convenience of each person, so that there is the possibility of having 3 days off.

The Belgian government has reached this agreement because its main objective is to make the labor market more flexible and to be able to reach an employment rate of 80% by the year 2030.

This new Belgian labor model also raises the possibility of working in a variable regime, in which working hours can be advanced in one week, in order to have more freedom in the following week, formulas that workers will be able to request from their companies, and that will allow them more flexibility when combining the different facets of their lives.

This agreement also makes it clear that every worker will have the right to know their schedules at least 7 days in advance, it also contemplates the presentation of training plans for the workforce, and the right to digital disconnection outside of working hours.

It also plans to make it easier for e-commerce companies to hire people between 8:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m., in order to better protect workers on platforms such as Uber or Deliveroo.

And another interesting measure is to allow people with a notice of dismissal to start working for another company during this period.

These measures by the Belgian government have as their main objective to make things more flexible, with tools like our Timenet system, this would also be possible to apply here if a similar law were passed.
