The push for teleworking appears to be in line with the ‘hybrid’ model, which combines office work with remote work. However, it also reflects a recovery in full-time teleworking, which takes up most working days.
At the end of last year, 14.4% of workers in Spain were teleworking, marking the highest percentage since the first quarter of 2021. Although this figure is lower than the 19.1% reached in June 2020 during the peak of the pandemic, it is still considerably higher than the 8.3% recorded in 2019. However, and despite these advances, the country has not yet reached the level of teleworking observed in the main economies of the eurozone.
Although the National Institute of Statistics (INE) does not provide quarterly data prior to the second quarter of 2020, comparison with the years before the pandemic reveals a significant increase in the practice of teleworking, which remains considerably above the levels before the health crisis. It is important to note that the composition of teleworking, that is, the type of activities carried out from home, has undergone substantial changes in the last three years.
